Ask the Expert: Something’s off… white!

Devon in Lincoln Park asked Designer Ann:

“Can I mix white fabrics with off white fabrics?”

“Please do!  In fact, using only one shade of white can be boring and flat.

I love to combine all shades of whites, off-whites, ivories, and creams in layers for visual interest and depth.

Try a chalky white with bone or sesame.  Pearly accents can add a hint of grey and a metallic shine.  It’s all about playing with texture and pattern!

If you’re worried about it looking unintentional, then plop a white pillow on your cream chair and say “Take that, color police!”

It’s like how you no longer need to match your bag to your shoes – doing the unexpected is much more modern and fresh!”
