Ask the Expert with Ellie: Adding Modern Touches to an Old Home

Q. My new home is vintage with a lot of character and charming accents, but I love modern furniture. Can I fill an old home with contemporary pieces?
A. Absolutely!  Contemporary furniture is often characterized by crisp, clean lines.  These structured pieces complement the architectural details that make vintage homes so filled with character.
A sleek piece of furniture lets those details stand out and define the space.

In this space, the arched detail on the windows is subtly reflected in the round nesting tables.  The crisp lines of the bases relate to the slender mullions.
Natural aniline leather is a classic material that will develop its own character over time, giving our Istra sofa an air of dignity and classic refinement that makes it fit right into a very traditional setting.

Here, we feature our slick and modern Lecco shelving against very traditional molding.  Keeping it all white allows the contrasting styles to work together.
The limitless customization on this system lets us design the shelving in proportion to the original molding – notice how the top height of the shelving lines up with the top of the door, and the next shelf continues the line of the wainscot molding on the right.
Subtle details in customization reinforce the architecture of the space and connect the original to the new!  Even the grey metal radiator is celebrated with brushed steel accents like the lamp and the end table and the muted sheen of the upholstery on our Cenova sofa.

Sometimes, it’s not harmony but contrast that makes contemporary furniture stand out in a traditional setting!
Here, the warmth of the walnut extendable table allows its crisp and strong shape to really pop against the neutral backdrop.  The London chairs appear to almost float around the table on their minimal black lacquer legs.
