Last week, I went over current color trends based on market research by paint manufacturer, Benjamin Moore. Today, let’s look locally to tackle another wall in your home… this time with wallpaper!
BoConcept Chicago and Urban Source have a long history of working together to satisfy the contemporary design needs of our clients, so I decided to interview their passionate and stylish owner and co-founder, Jenny Rossignuolo to get some insight on current trends as well as some technical tips of the trade.
BC: Tell us a little about Urban Source and what you do there.
JR: I co-founded Urban Source in March 2005 with a former colleague Rose Tejeda-Navarre. Rose left US (Urban Source) in 2010 and I’m now the sole proprietor. As the owner, I wear many hats – I run the business, work on design projects and step in when needed in the showroom.
Urban Source is a wallpaper and fabric showroom specializing in independent studios from all around the world.
Many of the lines that we carry are exclusive to us in Chicago. We also offer custom window treatments and upholstery services, as well as design consultations. We are open to the public and to the trade.
BC: Why Should someone use wallpaper?
JR: Wallpaper continues to be a growing trend that isn’t going away anytime soon. It’s a great way of adding drama to a room, and can literally change the look and feel of a room. Depending on the pattern/texture used, it can either become a great focal point in a room that otherwise lacks interest, or it can dress up a room by acting as an interesting backdrop.
BC: What current trends are happening with wallpaper?
JR: We continue to see a lot of blues – from turquoise to navy, as well as a lot of Ikat designs coming from some of the larger studios. Our smaller independent studios are mostly artist-driven lines, where they are not so much looking to follow trends as they are expressing different points of view in their work. Because of this, many of our wallpapers are timeless, and just allow the homeowner or designer to express their own personal sense of style with wallpapers.
BC: Can we use wallpaper in any room?
JR: You certainly can! The room you wallpaper will affect the type of wallpaper that you choose.
BC: Are there technical things we should know when purchasing wallpaper?
JR: Yes. Some papers are more delicate than others. If installing in a kitchen or bathroom, choosing a paper that is wipeable is advisable.
You can also choose a vinyl, or a vinyl alternative wall-covering, for such areas as they are scrubbable and will withstand moisture better than grasscloths or papers.
Such wallcoverings are also great for heavy traffic areas such as staircases and hallways, especially if you have kids who may be running through these areas. In bathrooms, you also need to make sure that you have good ventilation, and that you don’t get steam build-ups on your walls because eventually, this will cause any wallcovering to delaminate.
BC: Are there any sales we should know about?
JR: We do have a special sale going on at the moment – every month, starting with July, we’ll be featuring a “Studio of the Month”, and offering a special on their products.
Our first featured studio is Madison and Grow. We’re offering 15% off all fabric orders from this studio through the end of July.
Besides their exciting and ever-changing selection of wallpaper, Urban Source also offers window treatments upholstery services, and custom pillows, bedding and area rugs. Described as “a candy store for your home.” you have to pop in to 1429 W. Chicago Ave and see it to believe it!
